I at length came to the determination to “ask of God,” concluding that if he gave wisdom to them that lacked wisdom, and would give liberally, and not upbraid, I might venture. 14 So, in accordance with this, my determination to ask of God, I retired to the woods to make the attempt. It was on the morning of a beautiful, clear day, early in the spring of eighteen hundred and twenty. It was the first time in my life that I had made such an attempt, for amidst all my anxieties I had never as yet made the attempt to pray vocally. I suggest that you read a biography or autobiography of Ben Franklin. His life reads like a storybook. By age 40, he had acquired enough money from his businesses that he would never have to work again. But did he stop working? No! He started devoting his life to giving back. Yes, we have a high company start up death rate in this country. But we can do something to turn that around. We can Ben Franklin-it. Buy that, I mean everything he did, he did with a passion. As we pointed out in Cracking the Millionaire Code, page 11, Money magazine advises the first step in turning a dream into reality is "seeking something bigger than getting rich." One of the forerunners in underwater photography, Ron Church, spent years building a reputation of greatness in his chosen field. He was recognized by National Geographic, Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the Westinghouse Deep Sea Exploration program, and marine scientist worldwide. His photos appeared in magazines and journals in most nations of the world. However, the government funds for underwater exploration, from which he had derived most of his income, dried up. He spent a few years with the Cousteau organization as their top underwater still photographer and then Cousteau’s undersea explorations, film, and book contracts ended suddenly. Underwater photography was Ron’s passion. He would continue his work! But how? He could choose freelancing and pick up assignments as they came by or he could start a business in manufacturing underwater photographic equipment, which he felt was badly needed. He chose the later. His reputation allowed him to attract good people to his board of directors. He did not know how to run a business, but his board members did. His connections allowed him to fill specific needs that only insiders know. His public image in the underwater photography of sports, film and scientific community gave his business a jumpstart. Was it luck that his company was profitable from day one or was it a set of enlightened circumstances driven by his passion that allowed him the privilege of success? He did not just start with a good idea. He started with a fundamental backlog of knowledge, expertise, and love of his chosen field. Of the three, his love of underwater photography was the most important. It was his love that caused his company to be worth million dollars within a few months. Study these two diverse examples. What lessons can you derive from them? Identify this passion as a business opportunity. Be as specific as possible. How have you built a reputation in the area in which you have a passion?
